Thinking Beyond WordPress? What to Know About Astro Apps

WordPress runs a large share of the web, and for a simple brochure site it still does the job. But most businesses need more from the web than a brochure. They need to take bookings, quote jobs, serve customers, run campaigns, and connect the systems they already use. That's an application, not a website, and it's what we build with Astro. Here's what that means, who it suits, and how to decide whether it's right for you.

What an Astro app is

Astro is an open-source framework for building web applications. Instead of a theme with plugins stacked on top, we build one application around how your business works. It might be a marketing app that turns visitors into leads, a customer portal, a booking or quoting system, or an internal tool that replaces a tangle of spreadsheets. Often it's several of these, sharing one codebase and one set of data:

  • It does the work, not just describes it. Forms, calculators, customer accounts, dashboards, and connections to your CRM, billing, and email are part of the app, built and tested together instead of bolted on with plugins.
  • It's fast on every device. Astro sends visitors plain, ready-to-read pages and adds JavaScript only where something needs to respond, like a booking form or a live quote. Less to download means quicker pages on every phone.
  • It runs on a global network. An Astro app can run on Cloudflare's network, close to every customer, with no single server to maintain or patch.
  • There are fewer ways in. There's no pile of third-party plugins, each with access to your whole system. Every feature is part of the app, reviewed and tested with it.
  • It's MIT licensed. No license fees and no lock-in, and the code is yours.

Your team stays in control

A custom application doesn't mean every change needs a developer. An Astro app can include an editor for pages, posts, and images, so your team keeps making everyday updates themselves. Your WordPress posts, pages, and images can come across too, so moving doesn't mean starting over.

Because everything lives in one application, bigger changes are quicker as well. A new customer workflow, a campaign with its own landing pages and tracking, or a new integration can be built, previewed, and reviewed before it goes live.

When it makes sense to move

An Astro app is a good fit when:

  • Your site needs to do more than inform. If customers book, order, request quotes, log in, or check on something, or your team retypes information from the website into other systems, that work belongs in an app.
  • You're planning a redesign anyway. Moving platforms costs least when you're rebuilding the design at the same time.
  • Speed matters to your business. Fast pages help search rankings and keep customers from leaving.
  • Plugin updates and security patches are a steady cost. Fewer moving parts mean less maintenance.

It's a weaker fit when your business depends on WordPress plugins with no simple equivalent, such as complex membership or e-commerce setups, or when your current site works well and you have no reason to change it.

Questions to ask before you switch

  • What should your site do for customers and staff that it doesn't do today?
  • Which other systems should it connect to: your CRM, billing, scheduling, or email?
  • Which features of your current site rely on specific WordPress plugins?
  • Who will maintain it, and how will your team make everyday edits?
  • What happens to your search rankings? (Keeping your page addresses, or redirecting the old ones, protects them.)
  • Where should you start? A focused first project, such as a customer portal or a marketing app for one campaign, proves the approach before you move everything.
