Climate Clean is a vertically integrated carbon management organization based in Bandon, Oregon. It measures greenhouse-gas footprints across all six gas classes, not just CO₂, matches each footprint with an Intelligent Offset gas for gas, and retires the credits on the Markit registry to its own RSVP standard: Real, Surplus, Verifiable, Permanent.
Its customers range from individuals and households to non-profits, auto dealerships, and companies that build offsets into the products and memberships they sell.
Climate Clean sells something people can’t see. An offset is only worth what a customer can trust about it, and offsets have had their share of bad press. The site had to show people what they were offsetting, and then prove that it had been done.
The old site couldn’t carry that weight:
- The work lived in two systems. The site ran on WordPress with WooCommerce and Gravity Forms, while the carbon ledger, nearly 7,900 offset purchases and more than 15,000 verification codes, sat in custom tables beside it.
- The calculator measured one thing. It estimated driving only, and it depended on a paid vehicle data service.
- Fulfillment was manual. Exports and invoice reconciliation turned each sale into a retirement and a certificate, and discrepancies crept in.
- Partners needed the same thing at scale. Companies such as Better World Club include offsets in what they sell, and every one of those sales had to become a retirement in the customer’s name.
Measure, offset, verify. The site had to do all three, and prove the last one.
Alpine rebuilt climateclean.com as a custom Laravel application on PostgreSQL in 2026, carrying the existing ledger across intact so every past purchase and certificate still resolves.
A carbon account. People sign in with a one-time code by text, email, or phone call, then build a carbon profile across six areas: vehicles, heating and cooling, electricity, flights, diet, and shopping. Each is a short guided step that explains why it matters, asks a few questions with a live running total, and celebrates when it’s saved. A weekly chart tracks footprint against what has been paid down.
Published factors, not guesses. Vehicle emissions come from the EPA’s FuelEconomy.gov, which replaced the paid data service and added electric vehicles. Electricity uses the EPA’s eGRID intensity for the home’s ZIP code, across more than 41,000 ZIP codes. Heating draws on local climate data, flights are measured by great-circle distance across about 6,000 airports, and shopping uses the EPA’s spend-based factors, with an option to import Amazon order history.
Pay it down. Stripe checkout handles one-time purchases and monthly plans. Each purchase is filled from verified offset inventory, oldest lot first, and a customer is never turned away if inventory runs short: the order is fulfilled and flagged for staff to top up.
A certificate anyone can check. Every retirement produces a branded PDF Certificate of Retirement, emailed automatically, with the project and registry detail behind it and a QR code. The code opens a public verification page that confirms the retirement against live records, and shows plainly if it was later voided by a refund.
A partner program. Partners connect their own Stripe account read-only and map their products to tons. Every qualifying order retires offsets in the customer’s name and sends a co-branded certificate; a refund returns the tons to inventory. A partner portal shows imports, tons retired, and monthly statements, and partners appear in a public directory.
An app on the phone. The site installs to the home screen, with a tab bar for Home, Calculate, and Sign in, and it works offline.
An admin for the people who run it. Staff manage offset supply and certificates, and see offset reports with monthly sales, year-over-year comparisons, revenue, and inventory runway. Month-end reporting and a daily status email run on their own.
The measure, offset, verify loop now runs end to end on the site. A visitor can calculate a footprint, pay it down, and receive a certificate that anyone can verify, without anyone at Climate Clean touching the order.
Partner sales become retirements and certificates automatically, refunds reverse them, and month-end reporting runs on its own instead of through exports and reconciliation.
The codebase carries more than 440 automated tests, which is what lets changes ship quickly and safely as the program grows.
Built with Laravel 13, PHP 8.5, Filament 5, Livewire 4, PostgreSQL, and Tailwind 4, with Stripe for payments, Twilio Verify for sign-in codes, and Postmark for email, hosted and maintained by Alpine.
